Johnny Depp Plays the Ultimate Ordinary Man in “THE TOURIST”

Image
J ohnny Depp is math teacher Frank Tupelo, an American tourist in Venice whose playful dalliance with a stranger (Angelina Jolie) leads to a web of intrigue, romance and danger in Columbia Pictures’ new action thriller “The Tourist.” “My main interest was to play the ultimate ordinary man,” says Depp. “The people who are perceived as ‘normal’ are the ones I find the strangest, really: they have tics and flaws and weird mannerisms. Frank is a guy who hasn’t really lived much of a life, so that was the great challenge – to play him as hyper-normal.” Right after olie signed up for “The Tourist,” the most important step for the filmmakers was to find the right male lead. Says director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck: “We really needed someone who wouldn’t be eclipsed by Angelina. When we brainstormed over what actor could be a true partner for her in terms of attractiveness, intelligence and acting skill, the only name that kept coming to our minds was Johnny Depp.” The actor and O

“THE RITE”

Image
I nspired by true events, New Line Cinema's supernatural thriller “The Rite” follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith. Directed by Mikael Håfström (“1408”), “The Rite” uncovers the devil’s reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth. The film stars Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins (“Silence of the Lambs,” “Wolfman”), Colin O’Donoghue in his feature film debut, Alice Braga (“Predators”), Ciarán Hinds (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” films), Toby Jones (“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”) and Rutger Hauer (“Batman Begins,” “Blade Runner”).

Angelina Jolie Turns on the Charm in “THE TOURIST”

Image
A ngelina Jolie plays Elise Ward, a beautiful (of course!) and mysterious woman involved in a romantic relationship with the wanted thief Alexander Pearce – but keeps her true motivations close to the vest, in Columbia Pictures' new romantic thriller “The Tourist.” “She’s instructed by Alexander to take a train from Paris to Venice, and while on the train find a man – someone of Alexander’s height and build,” says Jolie. “She finds Frank (played by Johnny Depp) and throws him into this adventure.” Jolie had been attracted to “The Tourist” by the potential of the strong female character and by the chance to work with director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, and to have him co-write the script. After a very early meeting, it was clear that the director and star were on the same page about the kind of movie they wanted to make. “Henckel von Donnersmarck's `The Lives of Others' is a beautiful, intelligent film, but also heavy,” says Jolie. “When we met, he was very cl

Matt Damon in “HEREAFTER”

A massive tsunami tears through a small beach town in Indonesia, dragging a French journalist under the waters and into a fleeting death. On the streets of London’s harsh projects, an accident causes a young twin to be cut off forever from the brother that has always guided him. And across the world, in San Francisco, a man disconnects from life to shut out the voices of the dead. What happens after death? How can someone so close just disappear? How can those left behind continue to live? Warner Bros.' new supernatural drama, “Hereafter” explores three characters’ search for answers about their own lives in the face of what lies beyond. “We don’t know what’s on the other side, but on this side, it’s final,” says director Clint Eastwood. “People have their beliefs about what’s there or what’s not there, but those are all hypotheticals. Nobody knows until you get there.”

Daft Punk Provides Original Music for “TRON: LEGACY”

Image
G rammy® Award–winning electronic music duo Daft Punk creates the original music score for Walt Disney Pictures' new sci-fi action-adventure “TRON: Legacy.” From their first single release in 1993, the combined talents of DJs Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter were hailed as a new breed of house innovators. Daft Punk’s sound is a brazen, dance floor-oriented blend of progressive house, funk, electro and techno. Following their brilliant debut in 1997 (Homework), the duo went on to release two more studio albums (Discovery—2001, Human after All—2005) and two live albums (Alive 1997, Alive 2007). When director Joseph Kosinski came on board to helm “TRON: Legacy,” he heard that Daft Punk, whose art form and style were influenced by the original 1982 “TRON,” were interested in the project. A pancake breakfast in Hollywood soon followed, where the three talked about Kosinski’s vision for the film. The three artists found themselves on the same creative page and bega

Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief, and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse (named Maximus), an over-protective chameleon (named Pascal), and a gruff gang of pub thugs. Also featured in the talented vocal ensemble is two-time Tony® Award winner Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel. Ron Perlman lends his voice to a Stabbington Brother, one of Flynn’s double-crossed partners in crime, and Jeffrey Tambor and Brad Garrett provide the voices of two of the thugs Flynn and Rapunzel

“THE TOURIST” Director Talks About Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp

Image
I n 2007, German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film for “The Lives of Others.” The searing portrait of a Stasi agent set against the political intrigue and subsequent collapse of the East German state, the film marked both his debut as a director and one of the most acclaimed releases of the decade. In January 2011, von Donnersmarck returns with his long-awaited follow up and first Hollywood film, “The Tourist,” which follows the exploits of Johnny Depp’s American innocent abroad in Europe, Frank Tupelo - a man who gets more intrigue than he bargains for when he falls for Angelina Jolie’s enigmatic screen siren, Elise.

Georgie Henley in “NARNIA” For The Last Time

Image
G eorgie Henley returns to Narnia for the third and last time in “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” based on the C.S. Lewis classic children’s book series. Fittingly enough, her very final scenes for director Michael Apted were action packed, typical of the adventure that she’s been on, both on screen and off, playing the delightful Lucy Pevensie who has journeyed far and wide into the magical realm of Narnia. In the third film “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the story centers on the younger Pevensie siblings Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes), who undertake the voyage of a lifetime. The adventure begins in Cambridge, England, during World War II when the children are staying at the home of their unbearably irritating cousin Eustace Clarence Scrubb (Will Poulter). All three are swallowed into a painting of a beautiful ship out at sea.

Image
F resh from winning his first Best Actor Oscar for “Crazy Heart,” Jeff Bridges now returns to the screen in the dual roles of Kevin Flynn and Clu in Walt Disney Pictures' high-tech 3D adventure “TRON: Legacy.” In the film, brilliant videogame designer Kevin Flynn always wanted the best of both worlds—digital and real. The daytime corporate wunderkind became the nighttime builder of the Grid. Then, one day in 1989, Kevin Flynn mysteriously disappeared. Chris Brown, a Suave Outlaw in “TAKERS”

G rammy®-nominated recording artist Chris Brown , already the star of the musical hit “Stomp the Yard,” plays Jesse, one of the suave outlaws in Columbia Pictures' new action-thriller “Takers.” A recent No. 1 box-office hit in the U.S., “Takers” also stars Matt Dillon, Jay Hernandez and Hayden Christensen. Lord Voldemort Hunts Down Harry Potter in “DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART 1” (Opens Nov 18)

Image
I n Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” -- the seventh and final adventure in the Harry Potter film series told in two full-length parts -- Lord Voldemort is on a mission: to end the life of “the Boy Who Lived.” Director David Yates says, “Voldemort is on the cusp of absolute power. He’s been hiding in the shadows, biding his time until he could come back and impose his will on the rest of the world. Everything else in his master plan has come together; he just needs to deal with this one tiny detail. Voldemort doesn’t understand how this ‘child’ has become his strongest adversary, but he does know he must be the one to kill Harry Potter. First of all, it was destined and, secondly, there is the sheer satisfaction of it after being thwarted so often. It’s beyond personal at this point.” Ralph Fiennes, who is virtually unrecognizable in the role of Lord Voldemort, says that his character is “driven by a deep rage. The only thing that fires him up is power and more

Matt Dillon Pursues Bank Robbers in “TAKERS”

In Columbia Pictures' new action-thriller “Takers,” Dillon plays another cop but of an entirely different mold. “No, he’s not like the guy in `Crash' at all. Although if you are going to play a cop, I would prefer to play one who is messed up!,” he laughs. “What I mean is, I prefer to play a character who is human, with flaws. Mostly in movies, criminals are more interesting than cops but in the case of `Takers,' the character is as interesting as the bad guys. He’s got flaws and I like that. He’s divorced, he’s got a daughter, and he’s an adrenaline junkie who is very caught up in his work.” “There’s a sequence in the film where he’s taking his daughter to a museum on his day off but then he gets some information about a guy that they’ve been looking for and he ends up going on a stakeout with his daughter. Image
B est known for his role of Dan Humphrey in the hit series “Gossip Girl,” Penn Badgley was more than happy to take on a new character challenge with his role in Columbia Pictures' new, edgy comedy, “Easy A.” Playing the part of ‘Woodchuck Todd’ was so tempting, he arranged to fly between the west and east coasts of America to accommodate the shooting schedules for both the film and his series. In “Easy A,” clean-cut high schooler Olive (Emma Stone) finds that her new-found bad-girl rap – courtesy of a little white lie about losing her virginity – has an upside: she is finally getting noticed. Olive decides to exploit her "easy" reputation and use the school rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing. Robert Downey Jr., a Control-Freak Expectant Father in “DUE DATE”

Image
I n Warner Bros.’ new comedy “Due Date,” Robert Downey Jr. is Peter Highman, an architect on his way back to L.A. from a business trip in Atlanta. He’s on a tight schedule because his wife is expecting their first child and the date is all set. Everything is fine until he gets tangled up at the airport with a wannabe actor named Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) who somehow gets the both of them booted off the plane and grounded for the foreseeable future. Stranded without cash, credit, ID or time, Peter finds himself in the galling position of having to hitch a ride home with a guy he’d rather take a swing at—Ethan. The person he holds responsible for his predicament in the first place is now behind the wheel of a rental car and offering him the passenger seat. Though clearly not his best option, it’s Peter’s only option.

“THE HANGOVER” Director Out with New Comedy “DUE DATE”

Image
F rom Todd Phillips, the director of the smash comedy “The Hangover,” comes “Due Date” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis as two unlikely companions who are thrown together on a road trip that turns out to be as life-changing as it is outrageous. Downey plays Peter Highman, an expectant first-time father whose wife’s due date is a mere five days away. As Peter hurries to catch a flight home from Atlanta to be at her side for the birth, his best intentions go completely awry when a chance encounter with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) forces Peter to hitch a ride with Ethan—on what turns out to be a cross-country road trip that will ultimately destroy several cars, numerous friendships and Peter’s last nerve. Sneak Peak on “EASY A”

Image
I n Columbia Pictures’ new critically acclaimed comedy “Easy A,” Olive Penderghast was a typical American high school girl, until she decided to be, well, A-typical. “Easy A” stars Emma Stone (recently cast as Gwen Stacy in the “Spider-Man” 2012 reboot) as Olive, Penn Badgley (TV’s “Gossip Girl”), Amanda Bynes (“What a Girl Wants”), Cam Gigandet (“Twilight”) and Aly Michalka (TV’s “Hellcats”). The film is directed by Will Gluck (“Fired Up”) from a screenplay by Bert V. Royal. What’s your average, everyday girl to do when her popular, detail-seeking best friend Rhiannon (Michalka) wants the lowdown on Olive’s weekend, and the boring reality is nothing to brag about? Can’t a non-entity, a perceived zero, an anonymous girl like Olive tell a little white lie if it gives her just a tiny taste of that magical prize sought by every teenager: popularity?

It’s awful. They hate each other.” Unfortunately, because of their mutual best friends, they’re stuck in each other’s lives and forced to be around one another on numerous occasions.
