True Grit Movie Review
True Grit is the first movie invite I got from Solar-UIP. They're the one who distribute United International Pictures, Dreamworks and Paramount Pictures' movies here in the Philippines. The screening took place in the Solar Preview Room in that posh Solar-Century Building in Makati City. Their screening room has the capacity of approximately 60 people, it actually resemble the MyCinema at Greenbelt3.
Anyway before I head on to the venue, I already read the synopsis so I know what to expect on the actual screening. Here's a quick synopsis of "TRUE GRIT," Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.
After I read the synopsis, I said to myself, my father will loved this movie for sure. In short, this movie will only appeal to it's target market, those who love Western films and that's not me. But I love many things about this movie. It has Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon who played their role very well. Another character I liked is Mattie Ross , played by Hailee Steinfeld which is partly Filipina. It's surprising that it's her first full length movie because this 13-years old gave an excellent portrayal of the role. I actually though that she is 'Hit Girl' in the movie, Kick-Ass.
This is actually my first Coen Brothers movie and they didn't disappoint me. The movie is picturesque and I felt like I traveled back in the time where real cowboys exist :) Although there are scenes which are dragging at times, there are occasional scenes that would surprise you. The real action is on the second half of the movie.Watch out for snakes! ;)
TRUE GRIT is set to premiere on Philippine theaters starting February 23, distributed by UIP-Solar Entertainment Corporation.
