I AM NUMBER FOUR Movie Review

I just home from the advance screening of I AM NUMBER FOUR at Cinema 6 of SM Megamall. Before I start, let me say that this kind of movies really tickle my fancy. I love fantasy films with great CGI and all that stuff, so when I received an invite for this movie, I immediately said yes.

For your reference here's a short synopsis of the film: Extraordinary teen John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) is a fugitive on the run from ruthless enemies sent to destroy him. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri (Timothy Olyphant), John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events-his first love (Dianna Agron), powerful new abilities and a connection to the others who share his incredible destiny.

The film is based on the New York Times best selling novel I Am Number Four, written by Jobie Hughes and James Frey (with the pen name of Pittacus Lore). I forgot to check out the synopsis/plot of this movie before watching it, but I already saw the teasers and movie trailers, so I had a bit of idea on what to expect.

The effects are impressive, the actors are okay. It's my first Alex Pettyfer movie and I think he gave a nice performance. He looks somewhat geeky so the role fits him. Dianna Agron, who play as the first love of the lead actor is pretty, but her reaction to every scene is just the same. Australian actor Callan McAuliffe who played as Sam Spellman is the one who crack jokes and witty one-liners that would bring the audience in laughter. Good thing his character is included because there are some boring and unnecessary scenes in this movie.

The make-up/effects on the villains they called as Mogadorians looks so real and they scared me a bit since I'm just a few seats away from the screen. They are 7 feet tall, no hair, has odd nose, icky sharp teeth, their eyes is almost black and they have gills-like opening in their cheeks. I tried to search for their pictures online as I type this, but no to avail. Kevin Duran who played as the Mogadorian Commander gave a very convincing portrayal of his role.

If you're wondering what's Number Four power is? his glowing special hand :) Those Mogadorians are not just 7 feet tall they have big guns too and a berserk creature to boot. But worry no more since Number Four will be help by ----. Ooopps. I'm not spoiling anything :)

Opening across the Philippines on Feb. 23, 2011. “I Am Number Four” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.
