Scienterrific Party at Philippine Science Centrum
Last Tuesday, I went to the 'Philippine Science Centrum Christmas Party with Bloggers and Media' held at the Philippine Science Centrum, E-Com Building, Riverbanks Center in Marikina City. This significant event aims to recognize the media’s great participation in the promotion of the Philippine Science Centrum and its science and technology advocacy.
The Philippine Science Centrum (PSC) which is Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST) flagship program has been hugely affected by typhoons Ondoy & Pepeng. Which got some of the PSC staff teary-eyed when they presented to us their accomplishments for the year 2009. Though 2009 has been a very tough year for them, PFST are proud to say that with optimism, they are 75% complete in the restoration of facility and damaged exhibits & already in the “service as usual” mode with school groups back to the Philippine Science Centrum.
The Philippine Science Centrum is the first ever interactive science center museum in the Philippines. Established back in 1990, with an objective to uplift the science & technology education in our country through providing a venue where science & technology concepts can be presented in an entertaining, experimental and interactive workshops that can be easily understood by laymen & kids.
The Philippine Science Centrum was established back on February 1, 1990 at the 5th Floor of Manila Film Center in Pasay City. In order to fulfill the science museum-center, the PFST's Board of Trustees led by its founding President & Chairperson, Engr. Ceferino L. Follosco contracted several government agencies & private companies and solicited for funds, services, and expertise.
It later transferred and resided inside the campus premises of University of the Philippines in Manila, wherein it occupied one of the buildings near Pedro Gil Street.
Currently it is located in Riverbanks Center in Barangka, Marikina City. At it's current state, the museum has over 2 million visitors, composed of students, teachers, children & adults, who came from all over the country.
Philippine Science Centrum is divided into different sections termed as Discovery Rooms, each one representing a different knowledge area. Each room then contains hands-on interactive display-demonstrations which illustrate a particular science concept. Currently, the Discovery Rooms are Earth Science, Mathematics, Body Works, Lights, Environment, Sports, Electricity and Magnetism, Cyber Works, Liquids, Vision, Mechanics and Meralco, which discusses electricity generation and distribution.
