NEVER LET ME GO Movie Review

Few hours before we head to Tagaytay, we, together with other bloggers watched Never Let Me Go on it's special screening at MyCinema in Greenbelt. MyCinema is not your ordinary cinema because the seats are limited. I think it only has 60 seats, so laughing hard and talking loud is not advisable since it will be heard by everyone inside. ;]

When I first read the plot of this film, I said this film will gonna be gloomy, sad and disturbing. To give you an idea, Never Let Me Go is based on the novel by Kzuo Ishiguro, the movie centers on love and betrayal among childhood friends Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley) are students at Hailsham, a very exclusive, very strange English private school. As children, the three spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. Tommy is an isolated boy who struggles creatively and is often the target of bullies. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them and yes, this film challenges the ethics on human cloning.


 In a nutshell, this film revolves around three "cloned" people. They are designed to donate their vital body parts one by one in the later part of this life.  Two of them became a couple and heard that there is "deferral" which means, temporary reprieve from organ donation for clones who are in love and can prove it. These 'clones' are required to have a 'completion' which means death and hearing about 'deferral' gave them a new hope.

This movie is a work of art, though the theme is gloomy and depressing, I liked it. It shows both the advantage and disadvantage of today's technology. The three lead played their role so well, especially Carey Mulligan. This is actually the first movie of her that I saw, and became a fan of her especially on the last few minutes of this film. Andrew Garfield, who I first saw at The Social Network also gave an outstanding performance. His odd mannerism on this film, feels so natural.

Though this one is not a feel good movie and just a science fiction, it shows me that life is indeed short, so live and love while you can.

Never Let Me Go is rated R-13 by the MTRCB, runs for 105 minutes and now showing exclusively at Ayala Malls. from 20th Century Fox, distributed by Warner Bros.
